Kara Danvers may be the central protagonist of Supergirl, but she is far from the only hero on this show. Tonights episode placed the bulk of the storyline on the more than reliable Alex Danvers, and she was certainly up for the challenge. From its very first episode, this show has doubled down on its main theme of complex, brave female protagonists. Even when it was inconsistently skipping along in Season 1, Supergirl had the one two punch of both Kara and Alex Danvers. Im not one to pit female characters against each other. We dont need to choose either Kara or Alex as the coolest character on this show. We can have both That being said, in watching Alexs coming out storyline season and now her inner and, often outer conflict as she refuses to give up on her father, its hard to argue that Season 2 of Supergirl hasnt belonged to Alex Danvers so far. But to highlight Alexs Season 2 storyline over Karas Season 2 storyline is to fundamentally miss the point of Supergirl and of feminist storytelling in general. Lost Girl focuses on the gorgeous and charismatic Bo, a supernatural being called a succubus who feeds on the energy of humans, sometimes with fatal results. Theres no denying that. Just ask Chris Pine and Reese Witherspoon. Since American audiences really became familiar with him. Feminist storytelling isnt about having Strong Female Characters. Its not about crafting female characters who are physically strong or emotionally stoic. Its about showing how traditionally feminine traits like empathy and compassion and, yes, the prioritisation of interpersonal relationships are strengths in themselves. Kara and Alex are Strong Female Characters not because they can fight though, their moves are pretty cool, but because they trust and believe in one another. Because they know they cant always do it alone. Lost Girl Episode 11 Season 2' title='Lost Girl Episode 11 Season 2' />Because they know they shouldnt have to. Watching Kara fight to stop the exodus spaceship from jumping to lightspeed was a goddamn beautiful scene, one of the best Supergirl has ever given us, and one that shows the fundamental strength of this show. From the Supergirl pilot, when Kara first revealed herself to the world to save her sisters airplane, to Exodus, when Kara fought harder than she ever has before to save her sisters spaceship, this show is about this sisterly relationship. Whether the particular scene makes it explicit or not and, sometimes it really does, Supergirls superpower is love. Okay, enough waxing poetic about the strengths of this show and episode, lets talk details. Exodus had a strong narrative framework in that it was about both Alex and Kara going freelance. For Kara, that meant choosing to blog an article warning aliens around the world that Cadmus had their number and was abducting aliens off of the street. It was a move that lost Kara her job and, though I feel sorry for Kara and dont necessarily disagree with what she did, given the stakes, I dont think Snapper is wrong either. Thats not luck. Thats being a good reporter. Snapper even throws a line into his rant about having a. Surely, that would have received more hits than Karas blog anywayIn a week where we also saw Logan a movie about a young, foreign mutant trying to escape the dangers of America Supergirls anti anti immigration storyline was welcome. If superhero stories are our current public mythos, then Logan and Supergirl are doing a damn good job of examining our public anxiety around immigration and trying to paint one of the most defining issues of our generation in a different, more human light. Exodus cold open, which saw a regular, happy family kidnapped because of their alien background was one of the best this show has ever done. Later in the episode, Alexs emotional outburst to her father was more than a little topical. Some of them have escaped famine, poverty, genocide. Its not pulling any punches. And by making this immigration theme about more than just its central characters, the show is strengthening its exploration. Immigration isnt just an issue for immigrants. It is an issue for all of us. For Alex, going freelance meant ignoring her forced leave of absence from the DEO to go after Cadmus and her father herself. Though Jonn was wrong to trick Alex into betraying her conflicted allegiances, he was right to suspend her. Frankly, she should have been taken off this case as soon as she beat up that suspect. The fact that Maggie didnt back Kara up on this kind of surprised me, but it was worth the perhaps out of character move to see Maggie and Alex go out on a Cadmus take down mission together. Again, I was less impressed that Maggie let Alex go into Cadmus on her own. Then again, Alex was more than able to hold her own. She proved how much of a badass she is by not only planting mines around the facility, but actually triggering them when Lillian Luthor tried to call her bluff. Youll lose. The act of defiance not only allowed Alex to board the Exodus ship to try to save the aliens aboard, but also inspired Jeremiah Danvers to be the man Alex thought him to be a hero who stands up for whats right, no matter what the consequences. Having a man do something terrible to protect the women in his life is a well trodden theme. For Alex and Kara, Jeremiah is still missing. For Kara, she lost her job. Sometimes, being the hero comes at a steep price. Read Kaytis review of the previous episode, Homecoming, here. Taboo recap Season 1, Episode 2. Tom Hardy is a movie star. Theres no denying that. Just ask Chris Pine and Reese Witherspoon. Since American audiences really became familiar with him in Inception, his appeal has been clear. Heck, apparently he might even be the next James Bond. Yet, what Taboo and so many of his other performances have demonstrated is that Hardy is truly a strange, dark, and brilliant character actor trapped in a leading mans body. Taboo is a cool and intriguing name for a show, but it really could be called The Tom Hardy Show and the second episode of the series continues to demonstrate why. While this episode follows up the pilot by delving more into the mystery of Nootka Sound and introduces a few more characters Al Capone, its still all about Hardy and his weird, yet intriguing character James Delaney. By the end, were left with Delaneys fate left in the air. Luckily, we know that we have at least six more episodes to enjoy Hardy in full dark, mumble, and grunt mode. And even as I say that the series is all about Hardy, the episode kicks off with Stuart Strange threatening to dismiss one of his many underlings. The only thing that can stop it is the death of Delaney. Well, that being said, hes sure to be unhappy with the latest happenings. Delaney returned to recover his buried bag of diamonds, which he immediately dug into to buy a Spanish ship in the name of The Delaney Nootka Trading Company. Unsurprisingly, Strange continues to be frustrated by the situation. After breaking down Delaneys actions out loud, he has a theory on who is behind all of this. Seems unlikely that Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell would be involved, but smart cross programming. While Delaney may have gained a ship, hes lost a horse. Left in the place of his missing animal is a note that reads Atticus. He knows exactly what this means, tracking down this man for what appears to be a tense showdown. As crazy as Delaney is, even he should be scared of Atticus. Not only is he played by Stephen Graham, a. Boardwalk Empire. Thankfully for everyone involved, the two appear to be more friends than rivals, so no fight, just a sit down. Plus, its been too long since Delaney had a reunion Delaney is worried about recovering his horse, while Atticus is much more curious about the largest and smallest thing that Delaney saw in Africa. In the least shocking news ever, turns out that Atticus is the person that people go to when they want someone killed. And such an occasion took place last year when a man wanted Delaneys father dead. Apparently, having a heart of gold, Atticus sent them away. Despite the perceived favor, Delaney wants something else from this scary man to be his eyes and ears. Hes playing the feisty and overweight prince regent, who gets a visit from Solomon Coop. The prince is unhappy for many reasons. The first being that the maps of the blockade of trading ships feature the U. S. More pressing are his issues with the rival country. He wants their ships sunk and survivors hung. This all caught Coop offguard, considering that he came to discuss the East India Company. Lucky for him, the only person following him turns out to be Winter, a young girl who lives with Helga and the prostitutes. Heaven Ain`T Hard To Find Movie Watch Online. She warns him that Helga has hired a man to kill him. The girl agrees to take Delaney out to the silver tooth mans boat, which seems like a very trusting move on both of their parts. Once within a reasonable distance of the ship, Delaney jumps into the water to swim aboard. After sneaking around, he finds no one and sets the ship ablaze. Returning to the boat, he discovers that the girl is gone. So it begs the question, are we dealing with a ghost girl situation The next day, Delaney goes looking for Helga and interrupts one of her sessions. Considering the frequency that he has visions, he rightfully wants to know if Winter is real. She denies knowing such a girl, insisting she wished she did because her Danish customers would love it. Im smelling a little will they or wont they vibe to these two, a possibility that only gets amplified when he takes off her wig and says, I like to see what lies beneath. You have goodness in you. After staring into her eyes, he concludes that Winter is her daughter, a theory that Helga doesnt deny. He wants to know where the silver toothed man is and attempts to recruit her like he did Atticus what an army hes building. NEXT Delaney is greeted by an unexpected surprise.
